About SmartBIO

The Advanced Bioresources and Smart Bioproducts (SmartBIO) research program brings together a diverse group of experienced scientists and students from the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University under a common framework.

UTU specializes in fundamental and applied research on photosynthesis, algal biotechnology, electrochemistry aiming to harness CO₂ and solar energy for the sustainable production of food, feed, biofuels, and targeted chemicals. ÅAU complements this expertise by developing innovative chemical engineering technologies for biorefineries, focusing on materials, fuels, energy, and both commodity and high-value chemicals. SmartBio fosters strong industry collaboration and supports the development of successful national and EU-level consortium projects.
