Greetings from Global Young Scientists Summit 2025!
The Global Young Scientists Summit (GYSS) 2025 was an intellectually enriching and dynamic event that brought together leading minds in science, technology, and innovation. As a representative of Finland, I had the privilege of engaging in thought-provoking discussions, networking with distinguished laureates, and participating in insightful sessions designed to inspire the next generation of researchers and innovators.
The event started with a site visit at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Singapore Management University (SMU), where participants had the opportunity to explore cutting-edge facilities and engage with pioneering scientists working on breakthrough innovations. The event featured several key components, including panel huddles, plenary lectures, and quickfire pitches.
The panel huddles provided an interactive platform where emerging scientists engaged in direct conversations with Nobel Laureates and other distinguished guests. These intimate discussions allowed for a deeper exploration of scientific challenges and opportunities, fostering mentorship and collaboration across disciplines. The plenary lectures were a highlight of the summit, with esteemed speakers sharing their groundbreaking research and perspectives on the future of science and technology.
Prominent figures who contributed their expertise to the summit included Nobel Laureates, Turing Award winners, and other distinguished scientists (Nobel laureates such as Aaron Ciechanover, Takaaki Kajita, Louis Ignarro, Steven Chu, Brian Schmidt, Konstantin Novoselov, Stefan Hell, Tim Hunt, Richard Roberts, Hartmut Michel, and Duncan Haldane; Turing Award recipients like Adi Shamir, Joseph Sifakis, and Leslie Valiant, Joan Rose(Stockholm water prize) Sue Black(Royal institution christmas lecture) and Fields Medalist Wendelin Werner). A highlight was the opening plenary by Professor Louis Ignarro, who delivered an insightful talk titled “Nitric Oxide Is Not Just a Gas Blown in the Wind,” sharing his groundbreaking research that led to the discovery of nitric oxide as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system.
As part of the summit, we were honored to be hosted by Ambassador Juha Markkanen at the Embassy of Finland in Singapore, where we engaged in insightful discussions on Finland’s role in global research and innovation. Additionally, I participated in a panel discussion on “Translating Research Data into Innovations and Global Welfare,” which focused on bridging the gap between research and real-world applications. The discussion highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, industry partnerships, and policy support in driving scientific advancements for societal impact.
I also had the privilege of meeting the Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore, which provided a unique opportunity to discuss Singapore’s vision for research, technology, and innovation. The conversation reinforced the importance of global cooperation in advancing scientific discoveries for the benefit of humanity.
